Definition

Any material containing radionuclides where both the activity concentration and the total activity in the consignment exceed the values specified in 49 CFR §173.436 (or determined per §173.433).

Primary hazards

Radiation presents minimal risk to persons in transportation accidents
Damaged packaging may release radioactive contents
External radiation levels increase with proximity
Fire and smoke may spread contamination

Public safety response

Isolate spill or leak area for at least 25 m (75 ft) in all directions. Stay upwind. Detain undamaged packages. Notify radiation authority. Priority protection: distance, time, shielding.

Common materials in this class

Medical isotopes (Tc-99m, I-131, F-18), industrial radiography sources (Ir-192, Co-60), uranium hexafluoride (UF6), spent nuclear fuel, radiopharmaceuticals.

Special provisions / notes

Three label categories by external dose rate and transport index (TI): I-White (TI = 0, ≤ 0.005 mSv/h at surface), II-Yellow (TI ≤ 1, ≤ 0.5 mSv/h at surface), III-Yellow (TI ≤ 10, ≤ 2 mSv/h at surface). Excepted packages are marked but not labeled. Fissile radioactive material additionally carries a Fissile label with Criticality Safety Index (CSI).
